Berlin

Well what can we say about Berlin, it was great! We flew into Berlin on Saturday afternoon and wasted no time getting out and about. Luckily for us Berlin are currently having a festival of lights on the buildings so we spent hours wandering the streets getting our bearings and taking lots of photos. We went to the Jewish Memorial which was really simple but very stunning. The Brandenburg gate looked great all lit up and then we went down Unter din Linden to the East side of the city. For a European city it has a lot of new buildings due to the war and then the wall so was quite strange to see new so close to the old.

On Sunday we got up and went to the Topographie of Terror which was on the site of the old Gestapo headquarters, it is no longer there after being bombed but in the basement where they used to conduct their interrogations is a display about the Gestapo and Nazi regime, very interesting and free so we liked that! Just outside was where the wall had run straight down the middle of the street to Checkpoint Charlie. They have fenced off some of the remaining wall. After that we went on a bike tour, we chose to do the Berlin Wall tour which was really good. We went to the East Side Gallery where they have a large section of the wall where artists can graffiti. Also we went to a part of the wall on Bernaurstrasse where they have the 2 walls with the death strip in between. Really incredible that it lasted for 30 years.

On the Monday we went to the Reigstag and queued for an hour to go to the top of the building and inside the dome, lovely views over the city. We then walked through the tiergarten to the shopping district in the West and Simon bought his first pair of Birkenstocks.
We went up the the top of the building at Potsdamer Platz to get another view of the city at night on our last night and then we were back to Glasgow on the Tuesday morning. A great trip and I would love to come back.
Here are some of the 118 photos that Simon took, they are a little bit out of order as they aren't named so it's a bit confusing when trying to post them.
Danke
